Special Education

The Wichita Public Schools provides a continuum of special education services for students aged 3 to 21.  By implementing a Multi-Tier System of Support (MTSS), teachers and support staff will ensure that students receive educational benefit in the least restrictive environment, providing a coordinated system of Special Education and related services for students with disabilities designed to meet the unique student’s needs and increase opportunities for student achievement and post-secondary success. 

This message serves as NOTICE OF DESTRUCTION OF SPECIAL EDUCATION RECORDS and applies to all students that attended USD 259 Wichita Public Schools and received special education services prior to June 01, 2008.   For these students, any Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and associated documents created prior to June 01, 2008 will be destroyed after Monday, June 08, 2015.  If you are the student or you have legal authority for a student who attended during that time period, and wish to claim the special education record, please contact Student Records at 316-973-4499 prior to Monday, June 08, 2015 to schedule delivery of those documents.  After this date the records will no longer be available.  
Please note that Special education records for each child with an exceptionality produced after June 01, 2008 are maintained by the school district until no longer needed to provide educational services to the child. Those special education records will be destroyed after five (5) years following program completion or graduation from high school, unless the student (or the student's legal guardian) has taken possession of the records prior to that time.







The division of Special Education includes offices organized to provide centralized support and management of the provision of service for students with disabilities.  The current organizational structure is designed to bring services and supports closer to the schools within an integrated service model.  It realigns services to promote collaboration and implementation of an integrated support model of Special Education and related services.  For more information on related services, see Student Support Services.
